Split Run Play Updates
Tuesday, November 21, 2000

ATK - Alliant Techsystems $97.88 +0.88 (-0.62)

Alliant's stock continues to build strong relative strength in the face of a very unstable market. Alliant is perceived to be one of the winners of new Presidential leadership, regardless of who becomes the next leader of the free world. Both of the contending candidates have vowed to increase military spending. Clearly this would be a good development for Alliant, which is the largest supplier of ammunition to the American military. Alliant capped off a solid earnings report earlier this month that saw the Company beat the consensus estimates by two pennies with profits of $1.72. Additionally, the company announced a 3:2 split payable on Monday. Therefore, we will be exiting this play no later than the closing price on Friday. To help lock in our profits we are raising our trailing stop to today's low of $97.00. Yesterday, the stock made yet another in what has been a series of new highs. The stock found resistance at the psychologically important $100.00 level. Longer term, the trend is still decidedly positive. In fact, ATK is one of the strongest looking stocks in the entire market. The MACD is positive and rising. Longer term investors may want to keep watching this stock after the split.

SYY - Sysco Corporation $54.94 +1.75 (+2.25)

Food product distributor Sysco Corporation broke through major resistance at $55 on Tuesday. Moreover, the stock hit an all-time high of $55.06 just before the closing bell. The breakout is significant because it comes on heavy volume despite generally weak volume on both the NYSE and the NASDAQ. SYY could be ready to run into the December 15 payable date for the 2:1 split. Until then, support is the 10-dma at $53.50 with stronger support at the 20-dma of $52.38. Resistance may show up at $56 or $60. We are looking for entry points on a bounce off of $53.50 or a move above $56 on volume of at least 400,000 shares by midday. Our stops remain at $49.50 as protection.
