Stock market investors have been engaging in a frantic search to find any stock in which they can confidently invest. We have had success recently finding companies outside of the technology universe that have been rallying higher on good momentum. Knight-Ridder, our latest potential winner, is a publisher of daily newspapers that also manages a news bureau information wire. Some of the company's better known properties include The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Miami Herald and The Detroit Free Press. Silicon Valley denizens have long been familiar with another one of the company's papers, The San Jose Mercury News. KRI also created SiliconValley.com, which is partnered with the San Jose Mercury News. These two KRI properties are highly respected for their ability to report about the cutting edge developments emanating from the technology center of this country. KRI was one of only a handful of stocks to establish a new high on Friday. Momentum traders may drive KRI much higher if the stock can trade above resistance of $61.25 on Monday with first hour volume over 250,000 shares. A positive start to the week will also likely result in a buy signal being triggered by the MACD. There is also resistance at the all time high of $65.00, which was established in October of 1999. Considering the dearth of momentum trading options in this market, it is not surprising that KRI’s Money Flow and OBV are very strong. We see excellent support being provided by the 20-DMA of $59.25. We are additionally encouraged by the fact that the RSI has plenty of room to the upside before the stock would be considered overbought.

| Update March 8, 2001
Knight-Ridder, one of the premier newspaper publishers in the country, announced yesterday that at least two of its properties, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the San Jose Mercury News, are suffering from diminishing advertising revenues. Although the news was hardly surprising considering the overall economy, the stock did suffer a decline of just over a point yesterday. In light of what the market usually does to uptrending stocks when they announce negative news, the relatively mild decline is quite encouraging. KRI does offer investors a good value for their money and they appear to be unwilling to part with their holdings in KRI. The 50-DMA continues to offer excellent support just above $58.00. There may be a good entry opportunity if KRI can bounce off this support. A move above today's high of $59.50 may foreshadow a retest of the 52-week high of $61.25. The MACD is somewhat trendless. However, a good pop up in the share price tomorrow could easily trigger a buy signal, according to this indicator.

Knight-Ridder is a major player in the newspaper publishing and news gathering business. A relatively low P/E of 17.11 has recently encouraged investing in this stock, which offers a relative value and subsequent peace of mind for nervous investors. One of KRI's high profile properties, The San Jose Mercury News, long known as the premier observer of the Silicon Valley, announced plans to layoff an undetermined number of employees and to restructure operations today. This news release, coupled with a market that has focused on technology value investing, has caused KRI to trade flat so far this week. That said, this market has long been characterized by sector rotations. Therefore, KRI could have a good opportunity to rally once there is some inevitable profit taking in the technology sector. KRI has excellent support provided by the 50-DMA of $58.00. The 52-week high of $61.25 is within striking distance. A move above this resistance, accompanied by midday volume over 250,000 shares, may prove to be fortuitous entry point. OBV and the Money Flow remain solid. What's more, any positive move over the next couple of days will likely result in a buy signal being triggered by the MACD.
