CB - Chubb Corporation $87.19 +1.94 (+2.56)
The Chubb Corporation is a large, broadly based property-casualty
insurance company. In 1997, to better focus on its core property-
causality business, Chubb sold its life insurance and real estate
operations, and what a difference it has made to the stock! Better
pricing, along with a shift in its business mix, has helped the
company to generate better growth for its investors. What's more,
the company currently has 174.75 million shares outstanding, with
600 million shares authorized and is trading just below its two
previous split levels ($93.25 and $95.50). For our play, Chubb
shares just broke above the all-time high resistance of $86.38 and
could be ready for another leg up. Although the advance was not
related to any specific news release from the company, the
company's shares managed to gap sharply higher and ascend on good
volume of 788 thousand shares. We suspect that strong gains in the
general market may have helped contribute to the run and will
likely be a factor for an extended run. Keeping this mind, we'll
look for key resistance levels to arise at $90, $95 and $100.
Opposition will likely get tougher as each new level is
challenged. On the downside, we'll be looking for the intermediate
high near $86 to present our initial support base. Just lower, the
5-dma of $84.51 bolsters the $85 mark and could be our last
foothold ahead of our stop at $83. Swift reversal from either of
these two levels will present potential entry points, if good mid-
day volume of 360 thousand shares can confirm the bounce. Consider
using the S&P Insurance Index (IUX) to reconfirm entries.
